Five Quick Fixes for Slow PC Performance
Uncategorized December 18th, 2007Slow PC performance can be caused by a number of factors. And looking for the main reason why your computer is working sluggishly could be quite a task on its own. But if you want to have a lightning fast PC without spending time on diagnostics, here are easy tips you can follow:
1. Run your anti-spyware and anti-virus software.
Between these two, the anti-spyware software takes a lot faster to complete than a full system scan. If your anti-spyware and anti-virus program is one and the same, try to see if you can run only the spyware checker so it completes faster. But if you have time, don’t hesitate to make your anti-virus software work. Your computer needs it from time to time.
2. Add more memory.
If your computer is new but it had slowed down to crawl even during boot-up, chances are you have some memory card issues. Either it is faulty or it needs reinforcement. If you’re not sure about buying memories or are not too happy to invest on hardware that may or may not solve the problem, have your computer checked by a professional. If he suggests you upgrade your memory, do so.
3. Delete all unnecessary files.
Check your hard drive’s capacity. If you are nearing your maximum storage limit, then you have just determined the root cause of the slow PC performance you’re experiencing. Your hard drive is working slower because of its load. Free it up by uninstalling unnecessary programs and removing huge files that you are no longer using.
4. Run a registry cleaner.
Most of the time, slow PC performance is caused by tangled registry entries. The registry is the place that tells the computer where programs are located, when they are scheduled to run, and how to make them run. If the registry is cluttered, the computer will find it hard to run the software, causing it to freeze for a moment.
5. Defragment
Defragment your hard drive from time to time. Sometimes, deleting files leave traces in your hard drive. Defragmenting the drive gets rid of all the hidden files you don’t need. Plus, the hard drive start to put all files together so it can easily be retrieved in the future. A full defragmentation process could take an hour or so, depending on your computer speed and the size of your hard drive. This is best run when you’re out for lunch or during the night.
