If you have a computer that runs a Microsoft Windows operating system and often find your computer is running slower than normal, there are many steps that you can take in order to optimize the performance of it. In fact, the performance of the computer depends on many things and several issues can slow down your computer. First, many applications that require much of the hard drive may be running at once just may be slowing down your computer. If that’s the case, try closing out some of the programs and seeing if the computer’s speed picks up. However, if there are other major problem identifiers that you can identify, there may be more steps you need to take.

Before you take any major steps, however, there are some simple computer maintenance techniques that you can do in order to optimize the performance of the computer. In Windows XP, these steps are really easy to take and require only a few keystrokes and mouse-clicks. First, defragmenting the hard drive in Windows XP may be helpful to not only affecting the speed, but also may improve the other aspects of the Windows Operating System as well. However, if you are using this Windows version, all you have to do is select Disk Defragmenter from the Accessories tab under the All Programs option from the Start menu. Even though defragmenting the hard drive may take hours to complete, there is no doubt that it’ll be completely worth it!

Another step you could take to increase the performance of Windows XP could be running different antivirus and anti-spyware removal programs. For example, Ad-Aware Personal SE, along with Spybot Search and Destroy are just two programs that get rid of a lot of troublesome viruses and spyware. Another tip for Windows XP users is to make sure that the Windows Firewall is turned on at all times. The XP Firewall keeps malicious files and malware off of your computer effectively and prevents harmful files from getting downloaded from the internet without an authorization from you! If you’re using the new Windows Vista, some of the steps you take to clean up and improve your computer’s system may be a little different, but the fundamental ideas are the same. All you need is a few hours or a full day to completely clean up your computer so that it will run faster, act better, and give you a better computer to play with!
